This page is currently being updated to include all of the activities I'm involved in, but here are a few of the organizations I work for or contribute to. Click on the picture of each organization to be redirected to their homepages, and post on the boards if you want to advertise some of your organizations that people should be aware of.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

This program was designed to help students of all grade levels to achieve their goals of going to college and entering into a career they will enjoy. Like any class in the day, students meet in this class to be instructed two days of the week on how to prepare for college-level work, mainly literacy and composition, and to practice their writing and reading skills which will benefit them in their other classes. For two other days, students bring in "tutorials," which are forms with specific questions from other classes they are having trouble in, and several college tutors divide them into groups based on the subject matter. This is when the tutors guide the students in finding the answers and provide them with the knowledge and comprehension that is demanded from them in their other classes. The last day of the week there are "binder checks." During this day, tutors will call students one by one to meet with them and will verify that the students are taking accurate notes every week and keeping their binders organized. By doing these checks, the students will be prepared to succeed in college.

I work between fifteen to twenty hours a week in this program with approximately one hundred students who are determined to go to college. I work with three teachers; I lead several groups at a time with their studies and evaluate their work near the end of each period. AVID is about developing an understanding of each student's needs and cooperating with the groups in order to propel them into society with a firm grasp of how they will handle the challenges that will confront them. As of April 2007, I am certified for both levels I-III in the AVID program, meaning that I am able to work in the program nationwide. RipRap Journal

The RipRap Journal is the creative arts journal of CSULB. They publish poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction, and have been doing so since 1951, two years after the university was established. I have recently contributed to RipRap during my undergraduate work, and had a poem published called "Escape to Recollection" in the 2008 edition of RipRap, Volume 29. That particular poem is available under the Faces in the Mirror link after you click on the Poetry tab. RipRap is an incredibly unique journal mainly because Long Beach has always been the scene for underground poetry, and for the invention of new styles and techniques. The professors of poetry at CSULB are famous world-wide for their creativity and original work. Copies of this journal are available on the college's website. Just click the picture above to learn more, to place orders, and to submit to the journal if you're by chance a student at CSULB.
